Nobokontho24, Barishal : Awami League candidate Shahdab Akbar Chowdhury Labu, the younger son of the late deputy leader of the Jatiya Sangsad Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, won the by-election of Faridpur-2 Jatiya Sangsad seat.

 

 

Shahdab Akbar Labu Chowdhury got 68, 812 votes while his closest rival Zainal Abedin Bakul, Bangladesh Khilafat movement candidate, got 14,878 votes under the banner of the banyan tree symbol. The results were announced tonight after polling was held uninterruptedly from 8 am to 4 pm on Saturday.

Returning officer Humayun Kabir announced this result privately after the election. Although voter participation in the by-elections was low, the elections were conducted very smoothly. Out of 3 lakh 18 thousand 585 voters, 83 thousand 690 votes have been cast. The percentage of vote casting is 26.27 percent. The seat became vacant following the death of Awami League leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury on September 11.

 

 

The number of voters in this parliamentary constituency of Faridpur-2 comprising Nagarkanda and Saltha Upazila of Faridpur and Krishnapur Union of Sadarpur is 3 lakh 18 thousand 472 people. In 806 polling booths of 123 polling stations, votes were cast through Electronic Voting Machines EVMs. Election Commission (EC) observed this by-election sitting in Dhaka through 1052 CC cameras.

 

 

A total of, 10 teams of RAB, 6 platoons of BGB, three judicial magistrates and 13 executive magistrates, and thousands of police besides several striking forces, Ansar and mobile vigilance teams were in the field to maintain law and order in the by-election. Multiple candidates submitted nomination papers, but in the end, only two candidates from two parties contested the election. There was not much enthusiasm among the voters around the elections. The polling stations were quiet.

 

 

The Election Commission (EC) announced the by-election schedule on September 26.
